In my opinion, eyebrows are undoubtedly THE most important feature on the human face. A perfectly defined brow will frame and enhance the eyes, complete any makeup look and provide a youthful appearance. Having defined arches can also give the illusion of a higher, lifted brow without having any surgical procedures or botox! Got to love that.
To me, the perfect brow needs to be specifically designed to suit your eye and face shape, it needs to have a defined arch and when the brows are filled in, texture and detail must be maintained. I love a brow where you can still see the natural hair – they shouldn’t be swamped with a tonne of product.
I rely on a couple of products to achieve a full, defined brow. Depending on the day, how much time I have and what type of look I am going for, I will either use a tinted brow gel, a pencil or a semi-permanent powder. Here are a couple of my favourite brow products:
1. MAC Eyebrow Pencil in Lingering
A medium brown shade that comes in a twisty applicator and is extremely easy to use. The fine tip allows you to lightly feather in brow hairs so you can completely avoid that over-drawn “sharpie” eyebrow look. I use this to gently fill in any sparse or “bald spots” in my brows.
2. Benefit Gimme Brow
A tinted brow gel that is perfect to add a small amount of definition, colour and volume. This product will create a very natural look as it adds a small amount of product to your existing eyebrow hairs which gives them a thicker appearance. This also holds the brows in place all day so it’s perfect to add for extra hold if you have already used a pencil or powder to define your brows.
3. Christian Eyebrow Powder
This product has excellent staying power and I use it to create a more bolder look. I use the colour in “charcoal”. It is an ashy, grey colour (hence the name charcoal) but I am really enjoying it because the neutral shade of grey creates a shadow in the brows and you don’t have to worry about it blending in with the colour of your existing brow hairs.
4. Anastasia Beverly Hills Eyebrow Stencils
I have recently rediscovered these little gems! They come in a set of 5 stencils and I can promise you that there will be a stencil in there to suit you. If I am plucking or waxing my eyebrows, I will VERY boldly fill my brows in using this stencil as it provides the perfect guide of what hairs need to come out and which hairs need to stay. I get a bit pluck happy and removing one crucial little hair and change the entire shape of your brow. These stencils pretty much eliminate that concern! I find myself reaching for these every day at the moment as it gives me the perfect shape every time! I just use my Christian brow powder with a small angled brush and use light, feathery strokes to create a natural, full brown. Yum!
As a rule of thumb, the colour you should use to fill in or define your brows is 2 shades darker if you have blonde hair, and 2 shades lighter if you have darker hair. Try and find a cool, ashy shade of powder or pencil. Oh and make sure it is completely matte with no shimmer or glitter in it – unless that is a particular look you are going for.
I highly recommend having your brows shaped regularly by a professional. Trust me, you will feel a million bucks!
Hope you are having a gorgeous day!
