I first saw these cookies by Totally Devoted pop up on my Facebook newsfeed a month or two ago and my curiosity was sparked. Then, when my good friend and owner of Mum and Munchkin offered a box of the Pregnancy Cookies for me to try, I happily accepted! Ps. Go and check out Mum and Munchkin – a great online store jam packed with practical parenting products!
Totally Devoted are a New Zealand based company offering a range of delicious cookies full of wholesome ingredients. The range includes Clever Cookies (brain food), Feeding Cookies (to promote healthy lactation), Family Cookies (immune boosting) and of course, Pregnancy Cookies.
The Totally Devoted website states: “We’ve included both ginger and chia seeds in the pregnancy cookie to assist with some of the unique nutritional needs of a pregnant mum. There are endless reasons why ginger is great to have in our pregnancy cookie. It helps to relieve nausea, heartburn, motion sickness, migraine relief and is great in aiding cold and flu prevention.” Add rolled oats, coconut oil and ground linseed and you’ve got yourself a great base for a super-cookie.
Free of preservatives, wheat and dairy, here is a full list of ingredients found in the Pregnancy Cookies:
Brown sugar, buckwheat flour, coconut oil, rolled oats, ground linseed, chia seeds, cinnamon, baking soda, ginger extract, Himalayan mineral salt.
As I am almost 30 weeks pregnant, I am well past the morning sickness/nausea stage, however, I am experiencing horrendous heart burn! My heartburn usually starts to flare up at around 7pm at night so once I had put my daughter to bed, I settled into my favourite spot on the couch with a cookie and a cup of tea and got to work on this very important review! I might add a little disclosure now – I am in no way a food critic but I will give it my best shot to describe these cookies! Here goes….
These are a healthy cookie so if you are looking for something that resembles a Tim Tam, then these cookies probably aren’t for you. Upon first bite I instantly tasted the ginger and cinnamon and then followed hints of linseed and coconut. Yum. These are an earthy-tasting cookie but the richness of the brown sugar makes them totally delicious. I noticed that the texture was on the crumbly side but that didn’t bother me in the slightest. While I sat munching away on my cookie, I noticed my Husband reaching for the box (3 or 4 times) so I am pretty sure he approves too!
As for the heartburn situation, I still had to take my usual medication, but I did notice that my symptoms weren’t as bad as they normally are. Thumbs up!
All in all, I am pretty impressed! I love the fact that they are packed with great ingredients so bub and I can both reap the benefits. How often is it that you find something that is yummy AND good for you?! I would be really interested to hear how effective they are in assisting with symptoms of morning sickness and nausea – please leave me a comment if you have found these cookies to help during that icky first trimester (or any trimester for that matter)!
Have you tried any of the other cookies in the Totally Devoted range? I know that I will be purchasing a box (or two) of the Feeding Cookies once bub arrives! You can buy these cookies (or any of the Totally Devoted range) directly from Mum and Munchkin for $15 a box!
Love Melanie xo
PS. I may or may not have eaten three cookies while writing this review! Whoops!
