A gorgeous friend of mine is pregnant and recently asked me about how my skin reacted during pregnancy… here is my story and a rave review of the product that saved my skin!
I had a very straightforward pregnancy. I was active, I ate well and I had zero complications. I was a champion baby grower but whatever crazy hormones my body was producing at each stage of my pregnancy (and after pregnancy for that matter), my skin seemed to tell the story. I can tell you now, I didn’t have that amazing pregnancy glow that everyone talks about. Nope. I looked like a hormonal teenager that had just started puberty!!
At around the 9 week mark I started noticing my skin rapidly going down hill. I was experiencing those painful blind pimples on my chin and forehead that seemed to take months and months to heal. I then started getting dry patches all over my face and an intense amount of oil through my t-zone. My skin was telling me it was dry, oily and dehydrated all at the same time.
Thankfully, I was lucky enough to treat myself to a monthly facial. The products and treatments my therapist used on me were “pregnancy safe” and mainly consisted of a gentle exfoliation, extractions (aka squeezing pimples!) and finishing off with a beautiful blend of nourishing serums and moisturizers to bring balance and hydration back into my skin. While this didn’t completely fix the issues I was experiencing, it did help me to know I was doing good for my skin.
At one stage I started to get this weird, crust of dry skin around my nostrils. It was so painful and no matter how much moisturizer I applied or how much I tried to exfoliate the dry skin away, it would just come back twice as bad. I asked my OB/GYN about it and he just put it down to hormones and sent me away with no miracle cream to fix my face. Waaaah.
I tried to keep my skincare routine as simple and as chemical-free as possible. I didn’t change my cleanser or day cream I was using at the time but one product I did start using was the Jurlique Skin Balancing Face Oil. I mentioned this in my previous post and I just can’t stop singing it’s praises. As soon as I started using it I noticed a huge difference and it injected a massive dose of confidence back into my every day life, and that, was enough for me. I don’t know how this product works exactly, but from what I read the oil regulates the amount of sebum your skin produces and as a result, you end up with balanced, perfectly, nourished skin. Miracle in a bottle. I used an entire bottle during my pregnancy I loved it that much but my biggest mistake was not having a backup on hand for what I was about to experience.
Once I gave birth to my darling daughter, my skin took a turn for the absolute worst. Not only was I going through the stress and anxiety of having a newborn depend on me for its survival, but I couldn’t even look at myself in the mirror nor could I make eye contact with my husband. I just wanted to feel pretty again. I wish I had saved the photos I took of how bad my skin got, but I just couldn’t stand to look at them so they were deleted. I’ll paint the picture: from my eyes down to my neck, my skin had developed this angry, red, lumpy rash that seemed to be a combination of eczema, acne and sunburn all in one. My confidence was at an all time low and NOTHING I put on it worked. Nothing. I knew that I just had to grin and bear it and hope that once my hormones balanced out, then so would my skin.
Then the penny dropped. I have no idea why I hadn’t turned to my liquid gold earlier (aka the Jurlique Skin Balancing Face Oil), but as soon as I started using this product again – my skin started getting better and better. It took time, but it WORKED!! I am by no means a skincare expect or qualified in this field, I am just sharing what worked for me. I had tried cortisone creams, calendula cream, rose hip oil, coconut oil, jojoba oil and just plain water.
To this day I am still using this magic oil! To get the best results for me, I deeply cleanse my face in the shower (being sure to remove ALL makeup before I start to cleanse). Once I am out of the shower I lightly pat my face to remove excess water but I leave my skin damp. I then apply 4-5 drops of the oil to my fingertips and massage it onto my face, neck and decolletage for around 30 seconds. My skin instantly drinks up the hydration and starts to glow. Leaving some moisture on your skin helps the oil to absorb completely. It contains oils such as evening primrose, avocado, rosehip and jojoba – no wonder it works wonders! I find it helps to manage hormonal breakouts, reduce scarring and redness and bring a tonne of moisture to my dehydrated, yet oily skin.
This product is well worth the investment of $65AUD. It will last you about 6-8 months as you only use a small amount with each application.
If you do buy this product I genuinely hope it works for you!
